Instructions

To find organization and contact data, enter in parts of a person or organization name, such as elk river, or the formatted organization ID, such as 0728-01.

Click on Search Help for advanced search options.

Click on Schools and Districts to the left to see listings of districts, schools, charter schools, among others.

Click on Tagged Collections to the left to see collections of organization data, such as Public Schools or Independent School Districts.

Is there a list of all Elementary Schools in Minnesota?

Questions like this are very common. To see such a list, go to the Tagged Collections page (see the link on the left).

The Elementary tag is applied to all schools with a school classification of type 10 (public elementary). Click the Extract button and select Organization Head (principal, superintendent, director, etc.) as the contact type you want. The csv button will then extract an Excel-formatted file.

Note that this does not include most nonpublic schools (they have limited reporting requirements so we cannot always tell the kind of school) and Combined Schools (school classification 40 for combined Elementary/Secondary). MDE ORG has a tag for this kind of school as well, Combined School. We also have a combination tag of Elementary/Combined that includes both kinds of schools. You can extract Excel-formatted data the same way.

All the data herein are based on what has been reported to MDE. Certain types of organizations, such as nonpublics, have very limited reporting requirements, which results in very limited data stored at MDE.

To find data, enter any part of an organization or contact name, such as "Elk" or "Smith".

I Cannot Find the Organization I am Looking For

The name stored in MDE ORG may not be the name with which you are familiar. In addition, names have often been abbreviated to fit within the limited space available on the legacy system.

Try a less-specific search. For example, if you are searching for Willow River High School and see no results, try removing one of the words. For example, search for Willow River High. (And notice that Willow River reports that the name of their school is really Willow River Secondary.)

Advanced Searches for Contacts

By default, contact searches only look for current or future contacts. Use old: to also look for all contacts, past, present, or future.

For advanced searches, do not put a space after the colon. For example do not insert a space in name:Marley.

Contact specialized searches
Syntax	Looks for
name:Marley	Only contact records with the given value as part of the contact's name. Do not put any space between name: and the name to look for, such as name:Marley.
nofuture:	Search only current contacts, no future and no past.
old:	Search all contacts, even past ones.
role:nurse	Only contacts with 'nurse' or 'site' (verification coordinator) or 'head' (principal or superintendent--organization head) or 'dac' (district assessment) or 'speced' (special education) roles. These are the only roles supported at present. You must combine this with additional search criteria.

Advanced Searches for Organizations

By default, organization searches only look for active organizations. Use inactive: to also look for inactive organizations. Nutrition types, 78 and 79, are also disabled by default. Use type:78 or type:79 in your search criteria to search for these records.

For advanced searches, do not put a space after the colon. For example do not insert a space in type:84.

Organization specialized searches
Syntax	Looks for
classification:10	Only organization records with that school classification number, such as 10 for elementary schools. You can use more than one classification. Either use the classification: search term more than once, such as `classification:10 classification:40`, or you can use a hat character (`^`) as a separator, such as `classification:10^40`.
class:10	(Shorthand.) Only organization records with that school classification number.
district:625	Only top-level organization records with that district, or major, number.
dist:625	(Shorthand.) Only top-level organization records with that district number.
group:RMIC_7	Search for organizations that are in the given group, based on the group ID. This includes the organization that heads the group as well as all active members. To find the group ID, view the details for a given group.
inactive:	Search all organization records, even if inactive (inactive in MARSS). This will mean that both active and inactive records will be included in the search results.
maj:625	Only organization records with that district number.
members:RMIC_7	Search for organizations that are members of the given group, based on the group ID. This excludes the organization that heads the group. To find the group ID, view the details for a given group.
nofuture:	Search only organizations active now, not active in the future.
nonpublic:	Short hand for `type:31^32^33`, the traditional set of nonpublic school type codes. These are not the only nonpublic codes, but the most searched.
organization:10625000000	Only organization records with that state organization ID.
children:10625000000	Only organization records with the same type code and district number as the passed-in state organization ID. You can use this to get the schools and programs within a district.
org:10625000000	(Shorthand.) Only organization records with that state organization ID.
prior:	Search organizations active now, active in the future, or active within the last state fiscal year (which goes from July 1st to the following June 30th).
site:100	Only organization records with that site, or school, number.
tag:tagName	Only records tagged with tagName. Note: you can only search for one tag at a time.
type:4	Only organization records of that organization type code. You can use more than one type. Either use the type: search term more than once, such as `type:1 type:3`, or you can use a hat character (`^`) as a separator, such as `type:1^3`.
magnet:	Only schools with the magnet indicator.
